A lovely young lady requested that I make a floating shelf for her to hang in her bedroom. She wanted a beautiful, but functional shelf that was off-white, heavily distressed, had ornate, wrought-iron brackets, and gorgeous, over-sized glass knobs. I set about building a shelf that met her size requirements, and after layering the shelf and brackets with black paint, shellac, and linen chalk-paint, I added trim to disguise any screw holes, distressed the whole piece, and sealed it for protection. I created a faceboard for the lovely glass knobs, and after they were installed, the shelf got a French cleat for easy and level installment at the back (French cleats are great for moderate to heavy weight shelves, and they are out of view once installed).
Now "A.D." has a lovely new shelf that is exactly what she requested - and I think you'll agree that the shabby-chic gods are happy with it too!

There are no "before pictures" of the shelf, since it was built from scratch....visualize some pine boards, trim, screws, and black iron brackets!
After:
Details: the wood is heavily distressed for a very shabby feel, and the 55mm over-sized glass knobs feel more like doorknobs.
